Beth Armstrong
Beth is an actor's director and has achieved her success not only by drawing remarkable performances from her cast, but also creating a beautiful frame for them to work in. Her passion is walking the fine line between drama and comedy to affect and inspire audiences.
Beth has made several successful short films and received government funding in 2020 to develop her feature film, a black comedy, Cry Baby. Beth's Master's film, Danya (AFTRS) screened at over 20 international festivals, receiving thirteen awards, five of them Best Film awards including the Boston Motion Picture Award, and the Jackson Hole Film Festival. Her last short film, You Cut I Choose toured Australia with the Flickerfest Film Festival, broadcast in Japan and was nominated for an Australian Director's Guild Award (ADG).
Beth was selected over a competitive field for director's attachment to Mel Gibson on the Oscar-winning, feature film, Hacksaw Ridge, funded by the ADG and Screen Australia.
Beth directed ten episodes of an Australian/Irish co-production, children's television comedy series, Drop Dead Weird, screening on Channel 7 and internationally. Her work was nominated for an ADG Award.
Beth's commercial clients include Gold Lotto, the Indian Ministry of Tourism, Queensland Workplace Health and Safety, Walls, Golden Casket and Weight Watchers amongst others.
A consummate storyteller, Beth has told competitive first-person stories on stage for the internationally successful "The Moth" podcast. Beth won three Story Slams and in 2019 was awarded Winner of the Sydney Grand Slam. On the back of this work, Beth was hired by Future TV to write a ten-minute short film for cinema release throughout Asia for the luxury brand, The Macallan Scotch Whisky.
Subsequently, Beth launched her own podcast, Curveball-The Club you didn't want to be part of, as host and co-producer in partnership with Unison Sound. Three anonymous guests are interviewed together about a challenging curveball in their lives. They are late-night, no-holds-barred, black-comedy chats over wine and are profoundly revealing and surprising.
